  • I have a dear niece who is currently attending Liberty University.
She even had her picture taken with Jerry Falwell <shudder> and proudly calls herself one of "Jerry's kids". . .
They have really done a thorough job of brainwashing her, unfortunately.
She's still sweet, but she thinks Bush is a wonderful person, just one of many things she's "learned" in college.

Funny thing about Bob Jones University is the role it's played in American politics. Many people now tend to think that the Roe decision in '72 galvinized the religous right but this is false. Few Protestants objected at the time. Opposition to abortion was seen as "a Catholic thing." What caused the religious right to rise up was the controversy at Bob Jones University in '75 (-I think that's the year) about interracial dating. The nation laughed at the backwater doofuses with their anitiquated ways. But Republicans---and I don't say this as a Republican basher; this is the history as Republican operatives tell it---swooped in and focused the outrage in people for whom this issue meant "the government is trying to tell us how to run our schools." When the Republicans sought to enlarge this base--millions of people who had disengaged from the political process--they needed another issue. Several were tried; none worked. None, that is, until abortion.
To make a long story short, Bob Jones U has something to do with abortion becoming a Republican issue. (I'm not a Republcan, though I oppose abortion.) Given that the original stink was over a policy that forbade interracial dating, I think that's kind of funny. (Among other things.)
      • Very astute -- and accurate. Like the monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey, the BoJos were there in the beginning as the galvanizing force, and ever since, Bob Jones University's presence (like the monolith's) has been the undeniable presence in every major cultural and political achievement of the religious right:

        George Bush's election?
        Check.

"Left Behind" phenomenon (book sales second only to the Bible -- to people who DON'T BUY BOOKS!)
        Check.

        Christianization of the GOP?
        Check.

        Christianization of government?
        Check.

        Clinton impeachment?
        Check.
(BoJo alumnus & Congressman Asa Hutchinson was "House Manager" of the impeachment proceedings, and Rolling Stone reports that the planning for the campaign to impeach was orchestrated by the Council for National Policy, founded by BoJo alumnus Tim LaHaye.)

        Explosion of Christian homeschooling?
        Check.

Intelligent design & 10 Commandments legal battles?
        Check.

        And so on...

I remember Asa Hutchinson during the Clinton impeachment move but did not know he was a BoJo alum. I didn't know Tim LaHaye was either, but I'm not surprised.
Think Hillary will make a campaign stop there???? Wouldn't that a something to see?
