Locally the battle about Intelligent Design being taught in biology classes has been big news. The Dover Area School Districts' entire school board was voted out this week! Hooray for the intelligent voters of Dover, PA.
Anyway, on the local news they kept showing Pat Robertson over and over giving his take on the whole situtation. His main point was something to this effect (I'm paraphrasing here . . .) - People of Dover you have made a grave mistake, let's hope that you don't have a natural disaster happen in your area. Because god may abandon you the same way you have abandoned him.
Wow, that must mean that the recent devastating hurricanes were a direct result of the evildoers in America abandoning god. Hmmm, I wonder why all those churches were destroyed . . .

Mon, November 14, 2005 - 1:27 AMI think in small doses, televangelists can be highly amusing. But when people actually believe them, well, that's when it gets scary.

Re: I hate televangelists!
Tue, February 21, 2006 - 9:24 PMI totally agree with you...here in my hometown we have a large community of evangelists that are just like that...and they're extremists to the point to label anybody that doesn't follow their religion as the son of satan...I don't go to extremes to hate them, but they're one of the reasons I first started to doubt on my ex-Christian faith...I do hate the concept of following and adhering to rules made by other humans -

Pinky,
But, Satan is in the minds of Pat Robertson and those who believe similarly. That means that people are born of their own thoughts, which ... has ... just ... got ... my ... mind ... all ... tied ... up ... in ... knots :-)

Re: I hate televangelists!
Wed, February 22, 2006 - 2:47 PMHis type of comments are just more public than same things many Christians think or say in the confines on their church. Millions of people. This is the way god works and we need to fit every result into those rules no matter how implausible to impossible and if they don't do that, the are considered a bad Christian amongst their peers. -

Jon,
Many, though not all -- and maybe not even a majority of them. A good friend of mine visited me in SF a couple of months ago, and we're very close (having known one another for 11 years) though she is very Christian, and I am very not. Anyway, during one of our conversations, she felt the need to apologize for Mr. Robertson, making a point to tell me that not all Christians think that way. Judging from her tone of voice, she was really upset about what he had said, and wanted to make it clear that she, and a lot of people like her, don't agree with him.
I thought it really sweet, as we do remain very close friends (despite our having to agree to disagree on some things -- she's also more on the convervative end while i'm more on the liberal). It's like she was, in essence, saying "John, you're one of the best friends i've ever had and one of the most thoughtful people i've ever met, and I take issue with anyone saying that you're going to hell."
Regards,
John, who considers himself very fortunate to know Christians like that :-)

Re: I hate televangelists!
Sun, April 2, 2006 - 6:02 PMI'm happy to see her sense of people is not so warped that she cannot bear the thought of you in agony for all eternity. I fully understand there are quire a few of moderate Christians out there. But when I see that nearly half of the US believes in literal creationism, I am left to wonder how many truly should be consider moderate.
It would have been extremely interesting to ask where in the bible it gives her the belief that a non-believer (denier of Christ) is not going to hell when they die. Moderate Christianity is such an interesting patchwork of belief systems. It almost requires a system of belief that is much more influenced by humanistic pholosophy than biblical. To me that seems to be a betrayal of both belief structures. Maybe because I was a Christian at one time and I've read most if not all of the bible. Just because it's horrible to think about doesn't mean God doesn't want it that way. Ironically, that takes real faith to believe. -

Jon,
Yes, i've seen those figures as well, but one thing comes to mind -- an oft-told statement about "lies, damn lies and statistics." :-) In other words, there are a couple of things at work here:
1. "literal" isn't "literal" to a lot of people e.g. some may believe that the earth and everything on it was created in 7 days, but "day" might have a different meaning that that which we attach to it
2. our perceptions change when the people being discussed are closer to us
... and likely more. I tend to paint people with their own colors, not those of some large group the people may be associated with, and i've known enough really good people (with widely varying backgrounds) to have learned that the broadest brush is the least accurate (though every now and then I need to remind myself).
Regards,
John
