"Da Vinci Code" vs. "Left Behind"

Ya know, I was just thinking. Nobody seemed to care about the mass genocide of non-believers during the apocalypse , armageddon in the infamous "Left Behind" series.

There appears to be a monumental double-standard going on here. It's perfectly fine to bash & destroy nonbelievers & send them to an eternal suffering & torment in Hell but when someone like Dan Brown writes a fiction he & his movie & book are attacked. Today they had a "Da Vinci Code" book burning!!! The Fundies are preparing for the new, modern Inquisition as we speak. Many fundies believe "Left Behind" to be nonfiction since it is about the 'end times' as described in 'Revelation' the last book in the bible.

It gives xianity the opportunity for the largest human mass genocide in history to rid itself of non-believers so that the entire world may then finally agree with them. Xians claim that everything changed with the new testament - even though it started off with their god allowing the execution of his only begotten son as a blood-ritual sacrifice & ends in "Revelation" with an apocalypse / armageddon. The bottom line is, If you're not a believer in jesus/christianity, you go to hell. Religion has been used to justify war, slavery, sexism, racism, homophobia, mutilations, intolerance, and oppression of minorities. - there is no moderation there whatsoever.

The Religious Tolerance website says:

"...during the second coming of Christ, Christ "will exterminate one third of the earth's population in a massive genocide. It will be numerically the largest mass extermination of humans in history".

Maybe non-believers need to start protesting before it's to late???

    Chopper,

With all due respect, what you describe is not the only double standard being applied. Consider that many nonthiests attack Christians for _not doing_ what their bible preaches (read: not being honest, practicing deception, etc.), yet other perspectives (like the one you communicated) attack them for _doing_ what their bible preaches (believing in the end times, advocating mass genocide, etc). Believers are not any more safe from propaganda from those who feel some primal need to vehemently align against them than nonbelievers like us are. People are people, and for better or worse, what binds us is far, far greater than what separates us. Bad behavior towards one another is not the domain of the thiest alone -- we're _all_ culpable. The promise (as well as the portent) of humanity lives inside all of us.

May I suggest actualizing a bit of that promise and, I dunno, being _good_ to one another, as opposed to coloring vast swaths of people with the words of some book, no matter what personal diety (if any) we subscribe to? No one is as shallow as any label applied to them, and if we _really_ believe in the value inherent in one another as humans (believer and non-believer alike), it is incumbent upon us to seek it out whenever we're able.

    Regards,

    John, human (like you)

      You're right,

"May I suggest actualizing a bit of that promise and, I dunno, being _good_ to one another,"

We have a freedom of religion in this country so long as it is xian.

“Religious freedom is one thing,” says Joan Bokaer, director of TheocracyWatch, a project of the Center for Religion, Ethics, and Social Policy (CRESP) at Cornell University. “But religious extremism is something completely different. What people aren’t aware of is just how deeply the radical religious right has penetrated our government—in all three branches. We really are very close to becoming a theocracy. People have reason to be worried.”

        Who was Mary Magdalene?
        by Acharya S

Was Mary Magdalene a "common prostitute?" Was she the wife of Jesus Christ and the mother of his children?

The mammoth success of The Da Vinci Code book and movie has propelled into the spotlight one of the world's most interesting figures, Mary Magdalene. In the gospel story, it is not to any of the apostles that the risen Jesus first appears but to Mary Magdalene, a momentous occasion that surely should have cemented her place as one of the most important people in history. The fact that it did not speaks volumes about the blatant disregard for women within the major monolithic religions, even in the face of the reverence for the Virgin Mary within Catholicism. Obviously, a "virgin mother" must be much more highly regarded than a common prostitute, which is what Mary Magdalene is assumed to have been. The recent fracas surrounding The Da Vinci Code revolves around the tradition that the precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ not only associated with this prostitute but married her and sired children with her. Nevertheless, despite all this intrigue, is Mary Magdalene really a "historical" character? It appears that the Magdalene is in reality one of the Triple Faces of the Goddess, worshipped within so-called Pagan cultures long before the Christian era.

The following information regarding Mary Magdalene is excerpted from my book, 'The Christ Conspiracy: The Greatest Story Ever Sold'.

        * It should be noted that the above was written around 1998, long before 'The Da Vinci Code' was released.
